Friendly Neighborhood Orthodontic Advice: What to Do During Common Emergencies

Unexpected orthodontic issues can happen at any point during treatment, whether you have traditional braces, Invisalign® clear aligners, retainers, expanders, or another orthodontic appliance. While certain problems require attention from your orthodontist, many minor concerns can be handled safely at home until you’re able to come into the office.

Understanding how to respond to common situations like a loose bracket, uncomfortable wire, misplaced aligner, or general soreness can help ease discomfort, protect your treatment progress, and prevent small problems from becoming bigger ones.

At Friendly Neighborhood Orthodontist, we proudly provide personalized orthodontic care for patients throughout La Grange, La Grange Park, Lyons, Western Springs, Hinsdale, Brookfield, Riverside, Westchester, and nearby communities. Our team is dedicated to creating a positive, comfortable orthodontic experience while offering support and solutions whenever unexpected concerns occur.

Common Orthodontic Problems and Helpful At-Home Tips

1. Loose Brackets or Bands

The Problem

Brackets and bands are designed to stay securely attached throughout your orthodontic treatment, but they can occasionally loosen. This may happen after eating hard or sticky foods, experiencing an injury to the mouth, or due to everyday wear over time.

What You Can Do

  • Cover the loose bracket or band with orthodontic wax to help prevent rubbing and reduce irritation.
  • If a bracket has completely detached from your tooth, carefully remove it if possible and save it or dispose of it.
  • If a removable orthodontic appliance becomes loose or falls out, place it in a sealed bag and bring it with you to your appointment so our team can evaluate whether it can be fixed or reused.
  • Reach out to our office to schedule a repair visit if necessary or unsure.

2. Braces Wires That Are Poking or Causing Irritation

The Problem

During orthodontic treatment, your teeth gradually move into new positions. As this happens, the braces wire may shift slightly and the end of the wire can begin rubbing against your cheeks, lips, or gums.

What You Can Do

  • Gently push the wire into a more comfortable position using the eraser end of a clean pencil.
  • Place orthodontic wax over the area to create a protective barrier between the wire and your mouth.
  • If the wire continues to cause discomfort and cannot be adjusted, carefully trim the end with sanitized nail clippers or orthodontic wire cutters.
  • Contact our office if the irritation continues or the wire is causing injury.

3. Mouth Irritation, Tender Spots, or Sores

The Problem

Braces, Invisalign® attachments, and other orthodontic appliances can sometimes rub against the soft tissues of your mouth. This friction may cause temporary soreness, irritation, or small sore spots.

What You Can Do

  • Rinse with warm salt water several times a day (mix one teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water).
  • Use orthodontic wax on areas where your braces or appliance are creating friction.
  • Consider using an over-the-counter oral pain relief product, such as Orajel®, for temporary comfort in small irritated areas.
  • Contact our office if irritation continues, worsens, or does not begin improving.

4. Missing Invisalign® Aligners

The Problem

Losing an Invisalign® tray can disrupt your treatment schedule and may impact your progress if you go without wearing an aligner for too long.

What You Can Do

If your Invisalign aligner is lost:

  • Begin wearing your next aligner tray and follow the recommended wear schedule, usually for two weeks.
  • Notify Friendly Neighborhood Orthodontist as soon as possible so we can review your treatment plan and adjust your timeline if needed.
  • Avoid leaving your teeth without an aligner for an extended period, as unwanted movement may occur.

5. Damaged or Broken Retainers

The Problem

Retainers help keep your teeth in their corrected positions after orthodontic treatment. If a retainer cracks, breaks, or is lost, your teeth may gradually begin shifting.

What You Can Do

  • Stop wearing a retainer that is broken, uncomfortable, or no longer fits correctly.
  • Contact our office promptly so we can discuss repair or replacement options.
  • If you have an extra retainer available, continue wearing it until a new one can be provided.

6. Orthodontic Pain or General Soreness

The Problem

Some discomfort is normal after braces are placed, following an adjustment appointment, or when beginning a new Invisalign® aligner. This soreness typically improves as your mouth adjusts.

What You Can Do

  • Use over-the-counter pain medication, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, according to the instructions.
  • Apply a warm compress to your jaw to help relieve tension or soreness.
  • Choose softer foods temporarily if chewing feels uncomfortable.
  • Contact our office if discomfort is intense, does not improve, or occurs with swelling or other unusual symptoms.

When Is It Time to Contact Your Orthodontist?

Many orthodontic concerns can be managed temporarily at home, but some situations require professional evaluation. Contact Friendly Neighborhood Orthodontist if you experience:

  • A bracket, band, or orthodontic appliance that has completely broken.
  • A wire that causes significant pain, cuts, or injury.
  • A lost, damaged, or missing Invisalign® aligner or retainer.
  • Ongoing irritation, swelling, or discomfort.
  • Concerns about whether your treatment is progressing as expected.
  • Any issue involving your braces, aligners, or orthodontic appliances that worries you.

Our team can help determine the best next step and let you know whether you need to come in right away or how to manage the issue until your scheduled visit.
